Poetto Beach is not one of those stunning beaches miles from anywhere. It is instead a gorgeous stretch of golden sand on the doorstep of a lively city.
Poetto might not be Cala Luna or the Villasimius beaches but it is a lovely lovely beach and an enormous beach too, long and wide, about five miles long I think. Best of all is the fact that it is right in Cagliari; a really lovely little city and so underrated or maybe just unknown.
I simply adore spending a morning shopping and sightseeing in a bustling city, then relaxing away the afternoon on a beach before enjoying the wonderful restaurants and nightlife that only a city can offer.
Because the beach is so long you will seldom find it very crowded except in August and on summer weekends.
We normally try to visit in June, when the weather is delightful and there are very few people around.
If it is crowded try to go up to the northern end of the beach with is usually a little less busy.
Poetto Beach is full of nearby restaurants and bars with entertainment and activity that seems to never stop in summer, people younger than me will find it easy to dance the night away.
I am sure you know of lots of nice places to stay near the beach but we found most of the hotels near Poetto to be poor so we always stay at the Caesars Hotel which is nicely situated in the city and the beaches are easy to get to from here.
Funny thing about Cagliari is most of the hotels seem to be far worse than most other cities in Italy but the Caesar Hotel seems better - very good value.

Andrew's Reply: Poetto Beach in Cagliari is a great beach and few cities anywhere have better beaches right on their doorstep.
It's a shame that most tourists seem to go to the towns of the north and few visit Cagliari. On second thoughts though maybe that isn't a bad thing. Cagliari hasn't been changed at all by tourism meaning that you, and the few others who've discovered it, get to enjoy a lovely city all to yourselves.
I agree too about hotels in Cagliari however a good value B&B in Cagliari is the Sa Domu Cheta.
P.S. Need somewhere special to stay in Sardinia? Try these hotels?
